MEET THE NEW NORDIES

Max Christman comes to the men’s Nordic ski team after a successful racing career at Bend Endurance Academy, Sun Valley SEF and Wenatchee Valley Nordic. Christman competed in four Scandinavian Cup races in Latvia and Estonia while traveling with the Junior U23 World Team and the U.S. Development Team earlier this year. He earned a 10th-place finish in the 2011 Junior Olympics in Minneapolis, Minn.

Why I chose UNH:  The school has what I want as far as my major, and the campus/Durham area has a really cool feel to it.  The team seams like a really balanced team when it comes to dealing with school and ski racing.  They are very serious about being good in both areas.  I believe that with the help of the coaching staff and my teammates at UNH I will be able to grow as a ski racer and as a person over the next four years and besides all of that, I will be getting a world class education.  Oh yeah, the food is amazing!!

New Wildcat Max Christman from Wenatchee, WA

Claire Galvin joins the Nordic team after competing for Southwest High School in Minneapolis, Minn. Galvin, a two-time All-City, All-Section and All-State champion, developed her skills at F.A.S.T. Performance Training with Bill Pierce and Go! Training with Piotr Bednarski. She finished second in classic sprint qualifiers, fifth overall in classic sprints, and ninth in the 10K skate at 2012 Junior Nationals.

Why I chose UNH:  I chose UNH because the moment I walked on campus I fell in love with the school. When I started looking at colleges I decided I wanted a large university with a strong science program and a competitive ski team and that is exactly what I found in UNH.  I’ve heard nothing but positive things about the school and the ski team and both are communities I cannot wait to be a part of.

Emily Larson joins the women’s Nordic squad after being a three-time member (2010-12) of the Rocky Mountain Region Junior Olympic Top 20 for the Western Regional Elite Group.

Why I Chose UNH: I chose UNH because it offers many great opportunities for me academically, athletically, and socially.  Also I love the community feel of the school and its New England location.

Ski Program announces Nordic Ski Team Scholarship Fund & honors WWII veteran Nelson Bennett

DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire ski program coordinator/Nordic head coach Cory Schwartz (’82) recently announced the establishment of the UNH Nordic Ski Team Scholarship Fund by Peter Chudy, II (’87) and paid tribute to Nelson Bennett(’40) for his contributions to the ski program and to his country during World War II.

The announcements were made during a gathering of ski team members, alumni, the Friends of UNH Skiing and Ski New Hampshire at the Whittemore Center Skybox Lounge on Nov. 4.

Bennett was a member of the elite 10th Mountain Infantry Division, which was a specialized ski infantry that was sent into critical battles in the Italian Alps and northern Apennines during World War II. Bennett traveled from Yakima, Wash., to take part in the celebration.

“This was a special night to celebrate the past and contributions by Mr. Bennett and other New Hampshire skiers in the 10th Mountain Division,” Schwartz said. “Likewise, the UNH Nordic Team Scholarship Fund will helps us in the future and enable us to recruit the top cross-country skiers to New Hampshire, as we strive to achieve a top 5 finish and eventual NCAA championship.”

Men’s Skiing Establishes Paul E. Berton Scholarship

DURHAM, N.H.– The University of New Hampshire ski program has announced that a new scholarship has been established in recognition of former UNH ski coach Paul Berton, commemorating his 33 years of service to the University’s ski program. The Paul E. Berton Scholarship Fund was created to provide meritorious scholarship support to members of the UNH men’s ski team.

The Paul E. Berton Scholarship Fund honors coach Berton’s commitment and dedication to the UNH ski team and his contributions to the sport of skiing in the state of New Hampshire and beyond. Berton served as the coach of the UNH ski team from 1976-90. Berton, hired by Director of Athletics Andy Mooradian after graduating from Plymouth State College with a degree in physical education, went on to oversee the alpine, jumping and Nordic teams in the early part of his career and later led the men’s and women’s alpine teams. Berton coached 12 All-Americans, eight UNH Hall of Famers, seven U.S. Ski Team members, three Olympians and a national champion. Coach Berton has also raised the profile of UNH skiing, especially during the four years the University hosted the NCAA Skiing Championships (1984, 92, 95, 2008) and the three years he served as the alpine “Chief of Race.”….more

DONATE NOW!

I have had the pleasure of being associated with many great athletes during my 30 years coaching at UNH. Every year, I am amazed to see, through donations and letters received from alumni, what UNH has meant too many of us. Like myself, I know your involvement with UNH and the ski team brought many life learning experiences, memories and friends that you will be with you forever.

I am asking you to give back to the team. I need your support so I can provide those same experiences and memories to the current and future teams.

Any amount helps. Please visit: www.unhskifriends.com to donate online.

Best Regards,

Cory Schwartz
